FAQs
I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the courage to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. In your work with your individualized counselor, they will help you explore and identify your strengths and how to implement them to reduce the influence of the problems you are facing.
What’s the difference between talking to a counselor versus my friend or family?
The difference is that a counselor has the training and experience to help guide you on your mental health journey. As licensed professionals, they can approach your situation in a new way- teach you applicable skills, help you gain different perspectives, and listen to you without judgment or expectation. Furthermore, counseling is completely confidential, so you can avoid potential negative associations in your real world relationships.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication can be effective but it alone cannot solve all issues. Sometimes medication is needed in conjunction with counseling. Your work with your counselor is designed to explore and unpack the problems you are experiencing and expand on your strengths that can help you accomplish your personal goals.
How does counseling work? What do I have to do in sessions?
We understand each person's situation is unique, therefore counseling sessions will look different depending on the individual. Your therapy will begin with your counselor understanding your personal concerns and goals, and tailoring their therapeutic approach to your specific needs. Our sessions typically last one hour and can be held in our office or virtually through a secure telehealth link.
How long does it take for therapy to work?
The length of time it takes to allow you to accomplish your therapy goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek counseling in the first place. Everyone's circumstance is different and your counselor can help you develop a plan for your own healing journey.
