Why should I talk to a counselor or therapist?

Counselors and therapists are licensed professionals that have the training and experience to help guide you on your mental health journey. They can approach your situation in a new way, teach you applicable skills, help you gain different perspectives, and listen without judgment.

Is counseling confidential?

Yes, counseling is completely confidential. There are a few legal exceptions, related to safety, that you counselor will explain to you during your first session.

How does counseling work?

Your counselor will start with getting to know your personal concerns and goals for therapy, and then tailor their therapeutic approach to your specific needs.

Can I do therapy online?

Yes, our counselors offer virtual telehealth sessions via a secure video link on our client portal.

Do you offer consultations?

Yes. We offer a free 15 minute phone call with any of our therapists, to discuss therapy style, ask questions, and decide if they are a good fit before scheduling an intake appointment.

What happens in the first therapy session?

The first session is usually about getting to know you. We’ll talk about what brought you in, your goals, and your history. You’ll also have the chance to ask questions and learn how therapy works.

Is therapy only for mental illness?

Not at all. Therapy is also for personal growth, stress management, improving relationships, building confidence, supporting emotional wellness, and navigating life transitions.

Do I have to talk about my past?

Not unless you want to. Some therapy approaches explore the past more deeply, while others focus on present challenges and future goals. We’ll move at a pace that feels safe and appropriate for you.

How long are sessions?

Sessions typically last one hour and can be held in our office or virtually through a secure telehealth link.

How often will we meet?

Most clients start with weekly sessions. Over time, sessions may become less frequent depending on progress and needs.

How long does it take for therapy to work?

Therapy is a process. While many people feel relief early on, lasting change can take time. Progress often happens gradually, and can depend on the type of approach you and your therapist choose to take.

How long does therapy last?

Some people attend for a few months to work on a specific issue, while others choose longer-term support. Everyone's circumstance is different and your counselor can help you develop the best plan for your healing journey.

What if I feel nervous?

Feeling nervous is very normal. Starting therapy is a new experience. You don’t need to prepare- just showing up is enough. Your therapist will help guide the conversation and explore what feels most important to you. Over time, clients begin feel more comfortable as trust develops.

Why shouldn’t I just take medication?

Medication can be effective, but it alone cannot solve all problems. Sometimes counseling is needed in conjunction with medication. Therapy can help you develop life-long tools for lasting change.

Can therapy help if I’ve already tried it before?

Yes. Sometimes it’s about finding the right therapist or approach. Different therapists use different methods, and finding the right fit matters.

How do I know if my therapist is a good fit?

A good fit means you feel heard, respected, and comfortable enough to be honest. You are allowed, and encouraged, to ask questions or share feedback. We offer free consultations prior to booking to ask your counselor about their style, methods, and approach to therapy.

What happens if I miss a session?

Life happens. Most therapists have a cancellation policy, which will be explained upfront. If you miss a session, you can simply reschedule and continue from there.

How does payment work?

Similar to your other medical care appointments, we can take insurance or private pay for therapy sessions. We will provide you with a quote and coordinate payment options during your initial set up.
